Paddock/Barn New project In The Mosman Council Area. The proposed bull elephant facility will be an integral part of Taronga Zoo's Regional Asian Elephant breeding program. The facility comprises a Barn (night house) and adjacent external paddock and exercise yard. The barn will house 3 holding pens, an elephant restraint device, raceways, keeper safe corridors, office & amenities & food preparation/store area. The paddock (2000sq m minimum) will accommodate a pool, a wallow, exhibit enrichment devices, containment fences, landscaping & shade structures. The proposed new holding barn is a single storey building located along the western perimeter of the site, adjacent to the Gibbon and Crocodile exhibits. The new barn is proposed to be constructed of facetted pre-cast concrete slab walls that are designed with planting pockets to evoke a stylized landform set in the landscape. The pre-cast concrete slabs will be angled and coated with an applied finish that is coloured to assist the building to blend into the landscape. The angled concrete slabs that form the buildings walls will be designed with ventilation penetrations so that natural airflow through the building can be controlled. The Works also involve the design and construction of the handrail to be fixed to western boundary; piled foundation for elephant fence; roof restraint system for the elephant barn for use by staff to allow safe future maintenance of the roof and vine planter; portable and fixed ladder roof access on western side of elephant barn; the precast tilt-slab panels (including physical dimensions, lifting points and texture); the smooth riding trolley system for mechanically assisted sliding doors/gates/elephant restraint device (ERD) that can resist all possible loads exerted by a fully grown male elephant; the hydraulic power drive system including pump, cylinders and hydraulic distribution and control for the ERD; mechanically assisted sliding doors/gates that can resist all possible loads exerted by a fully grown male elephant; the irrigation system; and the sediment barrier on the western boundary.
