The new museum will be based on the existing Newcastle regional museum & will comprise the following key functions: The Museum of Newcastle will be located in the existing Blacksmiths Shop. The Supernova, an interactive science & technology display & touring exhibitions gallery (The Craven Crane Exhibition Centre) will be located in the Boiler Shop. This area will also be used as a venue facility. The existing amenities in this area will be retained. An Education Centre, containing a flat floor seminar room & an open plan office/resource area will be located in the Wheelsmiths shop. The existing amenities in this area will be retained. The Newcastle Works, incorporating the BHP Technology Centre will be located in the Erecting shed. It is envisaged that the exhibition will be accessed via a sculptural ramp which will direct visitors from the foyer into the space. The link building will house a temporary gallery, & will be the public face of the museum. The Link Building will be enclosed with a form which will unify the 3 heritage buildings. It is envisaged that the roof form will be structural steel with a metal clad roof & internal lining. This space will also be used to potentially display part of the large objects collection. A cafe facility & kitchen to service the venues facility will be located in the Blacksmiths Shop. The project involves the construction of 5 storeys of underground basement that will service and interlink Blocks 2, 5 and 9 and the precinct centralised black water treatment plant. It is estimated that approximately 289,000m3 of soil/rock will be excavated to enable the construction of the combined basement under Blocks 2, 5 & 9. The excavation of the basement is expected to reach a depth of -6.75 RL. Excavation of bedrock may include measures such as rock sawing, and/or nonexplosive rock breaking techniques such as Penetration Cone Fracture (PCF) or similar methods as these typically have lesser noise impacts and low energy emission.The total basement GFA is approximately 60,000sq m including the retail area on basement 1. The underground basement consists of: retail section located on Basement 1; carpark spaces for Blocks 2, 3, 5 and 9 and for the service vehicles; loading docks servicing the apartments and the retail section; plant areas servicing the basements; separate plant areas servicing Blocks 2, 5 and 9 ; storage facilities for the Blocks 2, 5 and 9 and the retail area. As the basement area is being excavated, retention & stabilisation works will be undertaken, including construction of a secant pile wall around the basement prior to excavation. During excavation, the wall will be stabilised using ground anchors until the wall can be supported by the basement concrete slabs. A shell for the black water treatment plant will be located within the basement under Block 5B, the shell has 2 levels, each with an area of 523sq m.
