This project Construction of a new campus library to be located on vacant land south of buildings W3A, C3A & C3B, along Macquarie Dr. The new library will include Australia's first automated document storage & retrieval system that will allow the same volume of material to be stored in about one-seventh of the floor space. 80% of Macquarie's collection will be housed in this automated collection system, retrieved by robots & delivered to users. The remaining 20% will be on open shelving. The library will accommodate the following built elements: a large building footprint of approximately 6,770sq m on ground floor including the sunken garden at the northern facade (without the sunken garden the built footprint is approximately 6,550sq m); some 16,000sq m of gross floor area; 5 levels of library space including one level wholly underground and one partially below ground. The proposed development will appear as 4 storeys with the topmost storey occupying only a small (eastern) portion of the building footprint. East-facing entrance and foyer area including a café with indoor and outdoor seating; an automated book storage and retrieval system operating in an environmentally controlled vault; an exhibition space and one-stop shop; loading area; a number of library uses including: serial and new books section;- open access area; reserve collection; quiet study area; collaboration and group area; computer stations; - learning café and lounge; consultation space; training and meeting rooms; office spaces; toilet facilities; associated plant and storage rooms; and landscaped courtyard and perimeter landscaping. The building sustainability will be very high, with 4 systems of controlling air, including 100% fresh air systems, whilst rainwater collection, storage, treatment & re-use systems will significantly reduce water use. ESD initiatives include landscaped 'Green Roof' utilizing drought resistant planting; rain water collection and passive water filtering through native planted vegetation; water storage tank; treatment and re-use of rainwater for flushing of toilets, urinals and for irrigation of the external landscaped areas. The energy systems of the building will be designed to achieve significant savings in mains power requirements. This can be achieved through an integrated response to the primary power draws of air-conditioning and lighting and peak load reduction measures . When combined with the integration of passive systems such as thermal performance of the building envelope mixed mode ventilation, and night purge systems, measurable savings in power requirements are achieved All glazing will be selected based on providing a balance of high transmission of natural light, and low transmission of heat. The facade systems for the proposed library are predominantly 2 types: a podium to be clad in precast panels with inserted perimeter glazing & profiled form glazing, supported with aluminium framing. Blinds are proposed to eastern & western facades. Timber clad internal blade screens. The building sustainability will be very high, with 4 systems of controlling air, including 100% fresh air systems, whilst rainwater collection, storage, treatment & re-use systems will significantly reduce water use, & a landscaped green roof will help insulate the building.
