Construction of a playground with a series of linked terraces & ramps that sit into the topography & the vegetation in the North East corner of Kings Park. The entrance bridges over a natural watercourse to a serpentine access path that winds down towards the lake. Cut & fill are balanced to ensure that the development is grounded in its location. The individual elements within the facility are visually linked to their immediate environment & grass banks are incorporated into play areas. The development is essentially open, with the only architectural elements being the drop-off shelter, the kiosk and the toilets. The play structures include partially enclosed elements such as 'treehouses', forts and 'enclosed/secret places'. Some of the ramps rise up to two metres above the natural ground level and the tallest climbing structure is almost five metres high. Terraces and lawned areas will provide opportunities for breaks from the playground and picnics. A secure perimeter to the playground is subtly achieved through the use of sculptural elements, landform and vegetation. Visually the playground also 'fits into' its setting with the predominate use of natural materials and a restrained colour pallet referencing Canberra's autumnal tones. The architectural elements are simple, restrained but elegant structures, horizontal in line, working with the ground plan and integrated through a series of decks and terraces. The playground is inserted into the existing planting of blue gums in this corner of the park with a number of the currently sound trees on the periphery of the development retained, in the short term, to provide shade and a visual softening. Planting within the playground will also provide shading, seasonal change and a softening of the built elements. Planting will also define spaces, elements and pathways. The species proposed are suitable to the Canberra climate, appropriate to the function and the setting and are a mix of native and exotic planting reflecting the overall character of the Parliamentary Triangle.The proposed development respects the nearby memorials through careful siting, configuration and screening, with the highest intensity areas oriented away from the closest memorials. Overall the playground, with its themes of family, inclusion and support, is a 'good fit', particularly with the National Police Memorial and the National Workers' Memorial. The playground will lift their visibility and awareness and the access footpaths and amenities will provide an increased level of support for these sites.It is already clear that the playground will provide a 'destination attraction' for national, interstate and local families and will generate long stay visits. This will introduce a new profile of visitors to the national area, will increase visits to Kings Park and will lift the activity in, and vitality, of this location. The new attraction's amenities and the kiosk will provide valuable support to other tourists and locals walking around Lake Burley Griffin and visiting the Carillon and Memorials.
