BETHUNGRA DAM
Dam - Safety Upgrade New project In The Junee Council Area. Bethungra dam stabilisation. Buttressing the concrete dam wall with rockfill & construction of a gabion lined overflow spillway to handle flood inflows. Scope of work includes: removal & lawful disposal of any plants, trees & materials that may cause hindrance to construction within a 10m footprint of the rockfill buttress toe and stilling basin, including cut batters. Construction of a temporary access track to the left abutment and the crest of the dam to provide access for construction; maintain the roads (both existing & constructed) throughout the life of the project. Construct a temporary diversion (e.g pumping or siphoning etc) for use in drawdown of the reservoir & for flood diversion around the works area during construction. Lowering of the reservoir to enable safe construction of the works and to limit the risk of flooding during construction. Construct temporary fencing for safety of livestock in reserve foreshores & maintain water supply for the stock during draw down of reservoir water level. Excavation downstream of the dam to provide a suitable foundation for placement of the rockfill buttress. Winning, screening and possibly crushing rock sourced from the existing spoil emplacement area at the Bethungra Spiral, stockpiling in required gradings, testing & haulage to the dam for temporary stockpiling or direct placement into the rockfill buttress. Construction of the rockfill buttress on the downstream side of the existing dam. Construction of a gabion lined spillway over the rockfill buttress to safely convey overtopping flows to the stilling basin. Anchoring the gabions at the downstream toe of the dam into the foundation. Excavation of a stilling basin downstream of the rockfill buttress. Lining the stilling basin perimeter with gabions. Excavating a portion of the existing concrete dam crest non-overflow abutment (11m wide) down to the existing spillway sill level. Raising a portion of the existing spillway (54m wide) on the left hand side will be raised up to the non-overflow dam crest level by filling with concrete. Construction of a small concrete kerb/nib wall (0.31m high by 0.2m wide) on the upstream crest of the non-overflow section of the dam (existing and raised sections). Decommissioning of the existing nonoperable outlet works by concrete encasing the existing valves, removal of the winch from dam crest & removal of any pipework within the rockfill buttress footprint. Construction of a man-proof fence around the perimeter of the dam (including the rockfill buttress & stilling basin). Decommissioning & removal of existing dam instrumentation on the dam crest. Demolition of the concrete weir structure at the dam toe. Placement of excess spoil from the excavation for the buttress foundation on the upstream left abutment & revegetating. Potential placement of fill in the Bethungra Dam Reserve Area. Landscape the disturbed areas of the bank. Reinstate private property such as fencing removed in order to carry out the works. Restore all private property damaged as a result of the works to its pre-construction condition; this may include the provision of fill material or topsoil & turf to restore the height of the levee.
