AUSTRALIAN MUSEUM - PROJECT ZERO
Social (Library, Archives, Galleries, Museums, Interpretive centres, Tourist info) project at 6 College St, Sydney, NSW 2001 of Museum - Altns & Addns type of Addition development. Alterations & additions to the Australian Museum comprising a new entry hall on College St & associated access ramp. Removal of a decommissioned substation. The project comprises 5 main elements ? the Museum Walk, the Crystal Hall, the sheltered garden, the hallway into the museum proper, & lift to level 4. Museum Walk - a 4.5m ramp provides access to new entry from existing College St gateway, with steel post supports set back from the edges, planting to either side, steel palisade silver painted balustrade, stainless steel handrail, timber seats. Crystal Hall is a new transparent entry to the museum that accommodates welcome, ticketing & out of hours functions. The most significant feature of the new entry is its main facade to William St - crystalline screen, with double glazed units of high performance glass set within 8m high polished stainless steel frames, coloured glass diamonds provide shading internally. Entry into the Crystal Hall is through 3m high sliding doors. A 1m internal upstand along the southern wall acts as a balustrade with full height openable sliding window panels. Interior works include fixed joinery, flooring, ceiling with filigree of spaces aluminium tunes. Roof incorporates 2 banks of flat photovoltaics, fitted with safety rail. Sheltered garden involves removal of substation building, sandstone facing will be salvaged as facing to existing stairs & paving. The space will incorporate a glass platform lift to existing William St entry. Existing ramp to hall way to be regraded, new timber flooring. New lift to level 4. Lighting to new entry. Museum walk to be illuminated via LED light sources integrated into the handrail.
