PRINCE ALFRED PARK POOL

Demolish the existing buildings at the southern end of the pool, upgrade the existing pool, construct a toddler splash deck in the place of the existing toddler pool, and construct a building at the northern and eastern sides of the pool. The existing pool will be upgraded via: relining the pool using a 'myrtha renovaction system'; new plant and filtration; pool heating to extend the swimming season; adding blocks for diving; new flush deck made by cutting back existing hob; flip up boom mid way along the length of the pool to allow optimal pool programming; new 1.5m wide access ramp and stairs proposed outside the western edge of the pool to improve access but leave 9 lanes in tact; shorten the length of the existing pool by 0.3m to standardise the length to 50m to allow the pool to be utilised for competitions. The toddler splash deck is proposed to allow informal play in a circular flush deck at the northern end of the 50m pool in the position of the existing toddler's pool. The splash deck will comprise a soft fall material with water toys and comprise a dynamic water experience for children. A sculptural element is proposed over part of the toddler splash deck introducing visual interest and linking the current site use back to one of the former uses - for exhibitions. This element will also function as a shade structure. The building will include: pool plant; kitchen, cool room, garbage store and kiosk; cafe, with adjacent toilets, to service patrons from the park; male change rooms; female change rooms; garbage store; first aid room; pool supervisor External materials on the park side relate to the park environment - under a grass covered roof the building will disappear into the park landscape. Materials on the poolside are connected to the idea of the Victorian change room - durable hardwood timber cladding will line the face of the building to a height of 2.1m. A combination of washed and painted paving will be used throughout the external areas. The area of the proposed enclosure is 5723sq m of which 2529sq m will be grass. The proposed grass area is designed to provide a variety of experiences within it. Concrete bleacher seats set within the western mound will provide seating for approximately 261 spectators, with the lowest bleacher extending as a seat overlooking the toddler splash deck for parents. Landscape will predominate, with 1.8m of grass between each bleacher seat creating grass sunbathing terraces. The operable fixed yellow umbrellas that provide flexible shade to the grassed areas will extend into the seating area, their height designed so as not to obstruct view to the pool. Undercover seating for a further 42 people will be provided on the western side of the pool outside the change rooms. Click for more details...

The foyer will form part of the library with borrower & return services available within the public foyer, with a cafe concession & lounge seating. new public meeting rooms with flexible design for 10-250 people will be available with access from the public foyer. A new, expanded library of approx 1,700sq m extends from the ground to the first floor of the combined north & new wings. A new youth library is located in the south wing. The new library will have expanded reading & study areas as well as extensive IT facilities. Expanded floor areas allow for generous seating & collection areas, Council staff will be provided with new staff offices located on a single connected level on the second floor of the centre. The offices will be open, with central meeting rooms. The total gross floor space of the final development will be 5,864.5sq m. Approx 110sq m of the new ground floor space will be provided for a retail facility.The new ground floor level will be used for the purposes of 4 new meeting rooms in the administration section, new retail tenancy, new town hall foyer, customer service area, & general foyer in the new additions & Town Hall, stage, foyer, kitchen & storage in the north wing section. The first floor section will contain the expanded council library. The second floor section will contain the council's administration offices. The new wing will be constructed of reinforced concrete frame with steel roof. The new atrium void will have a partial glass roof & celestory made from high performance glass. The roof is of insulated metal deck with a coloured metal finish. The principal facade to the new public square will be glazed with performance glass.
