A project in the VIC Within La Trobe. International Power Hazelwood proposes to extend the Hazelwood Mine beyond the existing mining licence boundary, to allow continuation of the company's coal supply for the commercial operating life of the power station. Includes the extension of the mining licence to access the western part of the Morwell seam, diversion and restoration of the Morwell River, diversion and restoration of Eel Hole and Wilderness Creeks, as well as deviation of the Strzelecki Highway. More specifically the Strzelecki Highway will be raligned up to 1000 metres west of current alignment. Seven kilometres of the Morwell River will be relocated and rebuilt on a new alignment. The river will taken out of the concrete pipe and returned to a natural riverline environment. The Yinnar Driffield road will be upgraded to accommodate over dimensional 9 traffic. Once the pit is expanded (440m along strike x 220m wide x 170m deep), underground operations (open & backfilled longhole stoping) to commence via a portal to be located within the pit.
