ORD IRRIGATION EXPANSION PROJECT - STAGE 2 DEVELOPMENT (M2 AREA)
Civil Engineering (Rural Subdivision) project In The Wyndham-E Kimberley Council Area of Irrigated Farm Land & Infrastructure - Expansion type. The Ord-East Kimberley Development Project (OEKDP) is a visionary program to build a viable economy in the East Kimberley region based on agriculture & eco & cultural tourism. It aims to increase the size of the Ord River irrigation area to around 22,000 ha with the recent start of works for the first release of 22 new agricultural lots. The State Government (contributing $220 million) will focus on developing off-farm agricultural infrastructure, while the Commonwealth (contributing $195 million) will develop the social infrastructure of the region. The Ord Expansion Project has identified around 8,000 ha suitable for land release. Agricultural land will be released in stages following the construction of supporting infrastructure. The Weaber Plains M2 locality will be subdivided to create 22 farming lots ranging from 157 to 753 ha in area comprising a mixture of cracking clay & lighter soils. They will be irrigated by the construction of the M2 Irrigation Channel - an extn of the existing M1 Irrigation Channel. It is envisaged that subdivision & development of agricultural localities of Mantinea, Ord West Bank & Packsaddle may occur at the completion of the Weaber Plains project. Existing farmland is irrigated by the M1 Channel, which feeds from Lake Kununurra. This channel is currently being brought back to original design capacity to allow for the sufficient delivery of water into the planned M2 Channel. The Ord Expansion farmland is more than an agricultural project & will include investments in health, education, housing, early childhood facilities, Kununurra airport & Wyndham Port. Works will also include agricultural infrastructure, incorporating roads, an irrigation channel, off-farm irrigation infrastructure, power & telecommunications. The successful contractor will be required to maximise indigenous training, employment & business opportunities as part of the Aboriginal Development Package associated with the Ord Final Agreement. Phase One of the project includes construction of 19 km of irrigation channel, a 14 km road extension & irrigation control structures, as well as the implementation of indigenous & local employment; & business programs.
