FORMER COAL LOADER/CALTEX SITE - WAVERTON SUSTAINABILITY CENTRE
Hospitality (Restaurants, Canteens) project at Balls Head Dr (former Coal Loader/Caltex site), Waverton, NSW 2060 for New. Redevelopment of the former coal loader site for public use. The development will comprise new parkland and an associated Sustainability Centre. Demolition of former Caltex site office, drainage & resurfacing of the coal loader platform, handrails & balustrades, new landscape design & associated works. Various component spaces of the development have been identified. The Street consists of a series of existing industrial buildings including the mess, former powerhouse & caretaker's cottage, refurbished to provide new community and commercial uses. The Street will contain a vehicle drop of zone, visitor orientation kiosk (former paymaster's office) and vehicular entry. It is proposed that the Caltex site office be reconstructed , its function will depend on future use, options proposed are a community nursery, interpretation centre or a facility for the SES. A new cafe will be located to the south of the office under an existing shed roof. The masterplan provides for 14 carparking spaces. An existing toilet structure opposite the former powerhouse will be refurbished to create separate men's & women's toilets. The former Powerhouse will be refurbished to provide leased commercial space of 176sq m. The former face brick and tiled caretaker's cottage will be refurbished as a Sustainability Centre. The existing entrance will be retained and enhanced. the former bedrooms will be remodelled to provide new reception & informal display. It is proposed to locate the cafe opposite the Sustainability Centre within an existing structure previously used for vehicle storage. The Lookout is the end point of the Street sequence and is thee key point for site observation. Options are to re-grade the entire surface of the Platform and replace structural slab. The tunnels are powerful spaces that can support a number of uses from access to interpretation. Tunnel 1 will be used to interpret the coal loading process. Tunnel 2 will be used as an access way connecting the site to the Ball's Head bushland reserve. Tunnels 3 & 4 will be gated. The Square is at the heart of the site, and will remain mainly the same with tree planting. The slopes were created to facilitate access to the water's edge. A set of stairs will be constructed along the length of the existing stone wall. The thresholds will be treated as garden space.
