MOOMBA GAS OPERATIONS
Oil & Gas (Onshore processing facilities) project at Via, Innamincka, SA 5731 for New. The Moomba Gas Facility (Liquids Recovery Section) was damaged in a gas leak and fire on 1 January 2004. Initial investigation has pointed to a failure of a heat exchanger inlet nozzle as the source of the gas release. Findings from an independent metallurgical laboratory study have confirmed that the failure of the heat exchanger inlet nozzle (which led to the fire) was due to Liquid Metal Embrittlement of the train B aluminium cold box by elemental mercury. Further investigations are in progress to determine if any other factors could have contributed. Re-instatement plans included procurement of new cold boxes and associated facilities.
